Botox is a neurotoxin that can relax the muscles on areas of the face and neck which cause wrinkles associated with facial expressions or facial pain. Treatment with botulinum toxin can cause your facial expression lines or wrinkles to be less noticeable or essentially disappear. Areas most frequently treated are:

A) glabella area of frown lines, located between the eyes
B) crows feet (lateral areas of the eyes)
C) forehead wrinkles
D) radial lip lines (smoker's lines)
E) head and neck muscles

Botox is diluted to a very controlled solution and when injected into the muscles with a very thin needle, it is almost painless. Patients may feel a slight burning sensation while the solution is being injected. The procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes and the results can last up to 3 months or more. With repeated treatments the results may tend to last longer.

*SkinPlus MedSpa prefers to take a conservative approach to fillers and neurotoxin (Botox) injections. You can always add more once seen how the tissue and muscles responds after a couple of weeks.

Gummy Smile Correction

Two to Four units of Botox are needed to correct a gummy smile. Botox is injected in the area between your upper lip and nose to temporarily freeze the muscles that contract or elevate when you smile which allows you to smile without showing your gums. This is a well tolerated and quick procedure. Topical numbing for 15 minutes prior to the procedure can be used if so desired. It typically takes 3 days to 2 weeks to see the results which should last for 3-4 months and sometimes longer. The cost is $20-$40 each treatment.

What are the benefits of Masseter Muscle Botox?

Masseter muscle relaxation and facial slimming via Botox Cosmetic is surprisingly simple. Masseter Botox offers the following benefits:

Reduces Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, or Bruxism, is typically treated with mouth guards or lifestyle changes, If you have severe Bruxism, Botox injections may be more effective. As botulinum toxin weakens the masseter, it relaxes the jaw. This stops the jaw and teeth from involuntary clenching, reducing symptoms such as:

  • Pain in the neck, jaw or face

  • tooth sensitivity or pain

  • dull headaches

  • tooth damage

  • ear pain

Reduces symptoms of TMD

Like the masseter muscle, the temporomandibular join (TMJ) helps you chew. It’s a hinge that connects your lower jawbone to your skull. If there’s a problem with your TMJ, it;s called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). It often coexists with Bruxism and masseter pain. When Botox is injected into the masseter, it can relax the muscle and help relieve TMJ symptoms. This includes:

  • jaw pain

  • headaches

  • TMJ damage

  • poor range of motion in the jaw

  • jaw, face & ear pain

  • jaw locking

What are the potential side effects of masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox is generally considered safe. However, it’s possible for the procedure to cause side effects such as:

  • pain or swelling at the injection site

  • bruising

  • headache

  • flu-like symptoms

  • crooked smile

  • drooling

The healthcare professional will take a detailed history, do a brief visual assessment, palpate the area to be treated and manually isolate the muscles. If you’re a good candidate, a series of two to five injections will be administered to each side of the lower face in the massater muscle.

The procedure shouldn’t take more than a few minutes and is generally well tolerated. Most patients don’t notice much or any discomfort. For those with a low pain tolerance, a numbing cream is available. Recovery time is very minimal, as it’s a quick in-and-out procedure. However, patients are advised to avoid the following activities four hours after the procedure:

  • touching or rubbing the injected area

  • laying down

  • exercise

  • leaning down

  • taking pain relievers or drinking alcohol

Botox typically takes 2 to 5 days to start working, with full relaxation results seen in 2 to 3 weeks. This treatment typically wears off after 3 to 4 months and with some, up to 6 months. Best to return for maintenance when the muscle tension is beginning to return. This will not allow the muscles to return to the original tense condition.

There is no set number of units or dosage of Botox used for treating Masseter Hypertrophy. The average amount necessary for most patients is 20-25 units per side, with a great variation based on the size of the muscle and the client’s individual reaction. We are concertive at SkinPlus MedSpa at your first treatment. We will start with 10-15 units per side and have you return for a recheck in 2 weeks. If no adverse effects develop, additional botox can be added if needed. We customize your maintenance treatment amount to best suit your personal needs.
